The St Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research (SVCAMR) conducts laboratory based clinical, applied and translational research with a focus on immunology, HIV immunovirology and pathogenesis, neurology (including HIV brain disease), transplantation biology and cancer.

Forming part of the St Vincent’s Research Precinct which houses the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, SVCAMR is located in a community where many of the risk factors associated with acquiring HIV are over-represented. St Vincent’s Hospital has assumed a leadership role in the provision of care, treatment and research necessary for the early detection and prevention of AIDS in Australia.

St Vincent’s Hospital has demonstrated long-term commitment to HIV prevention, care and treatment in the form of initiating the needle and exchange program, housing one of the largest inpatient and ambulatory patient referral centres in Australia, managing the NSW State Reference Laboratory for HIV and supporting research to evaluate new treatments and delineate novel and important aspects of HIV pathogenesis and treatment related adverse effects.

The research precinct is undergoing an exciting period of growth with the impending completion of the Kinghorn Cancer Research Centre, and approved plans for the construction of a second research building adjacent to SVCAMR. This expansion will increase the precinct’s capacity to conduct research through additional laboratory and office space to house more researchers, and provide them with state of the art facilities and equipment.

With the wide spectrum of research activities conducted at SVCAMR, we remain reliant on the generous support of our valued members of the community. We are highly appreciative of any form of contribution to assist in the continuation of our research.
