The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is dedicated to optimising the care of St Vincent’s Hospital’s critically ill patients by conducting clinical research and translating the findings into clinical practice for improved patient outcomes. Most recently, the team has increased its focus on not just getting patients through their critical illness but also their long-term recovery so that they return to their previous function and quality of life.

Areas of research include sepsis management, mechanical ventilation strategies, neurological critical care, and bone health. Cutting-edge therapies in cardiopulmonary support are also a primary focus of research.

The ICU research team members have extensive experience in clinical research within the critical care setting. They provide input into clinical guidelines, research protocols, aspects of governance, data collection and grants. In addition to trials initiated and led by the team, they also partner with national trial networks and international institutions on clinical trial collaborations that lead to better clinical practice.

The interdisciplinary team includes doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and other allied health professionals as well as members of other departments within the hospital. The team is grateful to patients and families who participate in the studies that help shape the future of intensive care medicine.
