Bio

Professor Gail Matthews is the Head of Infectious Diseases at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. She is a UNSW Scientia Fellow, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and holds an NHMRC Investigator Fellowship. Specific areas of research interest include acute hepatitis C infection, therapeutic strategies for HIV and HBV infections, respiratory infections including COVID-19, and infections in immunocompromised and vulnerable populations. Prof. Matthews leads the Therapeutic and Vaccine Research Program (TVRP), which conducts clinical trials to assess the real-world effectiveness of new treatments and therapeutic strategies. The program also supports laboratory studies to better understand the underlying mechanisms of disease causation and treatment response.
