Dr Samuel Milliken joined St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney as a Staff Specialist in Haematology and HIV Medicine in 1990. He became Head of Clinical Hematology at St Vincent’s in 2014. In addition to his clinical work, leadership and medical education, Dr Milliken has been actively engaged in clinical research, particularly in the areas of new medicines, patient assessment and safety. Dr Milliken is past Chair of the St Vincent’s Clinic Foundation Research Grants Committee and past member of the Clinic Foundation Board. He is a past Secretary and Chair of the St Vincent’s Medical Council. In those roles, he was an attendee of the past St Vincent’s and Mater Health Boards. He is also an active member of the St Vincent’s Private Hospital Medical Advisory Council and Patient Care Review Committees. He has previously served on SydPath professional committees. Dr Milliken is a dedicated clinician who supports rural and regional haematology by conducting regular clinics in Wagga Wagga in addition to his clinical contributions at St. Vincent’s Sydney campus. With his local and international colleagues, he has helped establish and support blood stem cell transplantation services in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and the Phillipines. Dr Milliken is a Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Pathology at the University of NSW and has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and eight chapters in medical textbooks. He is committed to medical education and was a past member and Vice Chair of the NSW Health Postgraduate Medical Council (later MSEC) and chaired the inaugural NSW Basic Physicians Training Committee for that organisation. He is a past Director of Physicians Training and later Regional Director of Training for St Vincent’s Hospital before becoming Chair of the NSW Physicians Training Committee. He has been a senior examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr Milliken was clinical lead in the successful project to deliver major refurbishment of Ward 9 South (Haematology) at St Vincent’s Hospital, including raising over $7M in donations with the help of the Curran Foundation. He was also clinical lead in the establishment of the Cell Therapies Research Unit within the Department of Haematology in 2021, with the support of the Curran Foundation. This unit’s role is to improve the academic contribution of the Haematology Department developing both research and new therapies on the St Vincent’s Campus.
